The earthquake that struck at 10:48 p.m. local time (19:48 GMT), according to Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), shook Turkey’s Balikesir province and tremors were felt in Istanbul.
Sindirgi district governor Dogukan Koyuncu stressed that “there is currently destruction in several areas. We have not yet detected victims; we continue to track.”
Turkish media said that a total of three buildings collapsed during the quake: two on Akhisar Street and one on Cumhuriyet Square, which housed three independent shops in its lower part, while the upper floors were used as a warehouse.
The two four-storey buildings on Akhisar Street had already been evacuated and sealed off after being damaged in the magnitude 6.1 earthquake on August 10, 2025, pending demolition.
The earthquake had its hypocenter at a depth of 5.99 kilometers, and although it had the Sindirgi district as its epicenter, it was felt in many provinces of the Marmara and Aegean regions, such as Balikesir, Izmir, Bursa, Tekirdag, Kocaeli and Sakarya.
Sindirgi, a town of about 32,000 inhabitants, was already the epicenter of an earthquake on August 10, also of magnitude 6.1, which caused one death and fifty injuries, damaging 16 buildings.
In this context, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said through his account on X: “I extend my best wishes to our citizens affected by the earthquake that occurred in the Sindirgi district of Balikesir and was also felt in our surrounding provinces.”
In addition, he reported that the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority carries out inspection work on the ground: “Our competent units, in particular the AFAD, carry out inspections and field controls meticulously. We also closely monitor the process.”
